Hurley was born on June 28,1930 in Newark. He was discovered by fellow Hall of Famer Freddie Archer when he was fighting in a play ground.
Freddie took him to the gym where he, Willie Gilzenburg and Al Bryant worked with him. After 6 amateur bouts Hurley turned pro in 1948 where he fought as a middleweight. He fought and beat some of the top middleweights of his day including Tony Amato, Gene Buffalo, Yvon Durelle and Leroy Allen just to name a few. He also held his own with the likes of Joey Giardello (3 times), Tommy Bell, Joey Giambra and Artie Diamond.
