JAMES BUFANO, who fought under the name of JIMMY POWERS, was born on December 29, 1895 in Hoboken, New Jersey Jimmy fought as a featherweight during the. years 1915-1918 just prior to, and after World War I. He also served in the U. S. Army during WWI.
JIMMY POWERS, WAS A LEADING CONTENDER IN THOSE DAYS HAVING FOUGHT ALL THE TOP BOYS OF THAT ERA. He boxed under Promoter TEX RICKARD, OIl the same card with BENNY LEONARD, when he defended his lightweight title against JOE WELLING.
JIMMY’S most notable bout was with JOHNNY DUNDEE. He lasted nine furious rounds against DUNDEE, before’ he suffered a T.K.O. at the hands of this “All Time Great” boxed, at the old Pioneer Club, in New York, April 20, 1917.
Some other great men that POWERS fought were WILLIE JACKSON, TOMMY TOUHEY, JEM MACE, DAVE CROSS, YOUNG SEIGER, BABE HERMAN, CHARLEY PILKINGTON, EDDIE LEONARD, WILLIE DRUMMIE, JOHNNY O’LEARY, YOUNG REILLY, JIMMY MACK, LEW SNYDER, YOUNG ROBIDEAU, WILLIE CURRY, RAY SHAARA, AL NELSON, YOUNG KETCHELL and many others of that era. Most of these bouts were of the ten round nodecision variety.
A life long resident of Hoboken, New Jersey, JIMMY served as a motorcycle patrolman there for 37 years before his retirement in 1959 .
JIMMY POWERS, passed on at the age of 80 on November 19, 1976, at the East Orange Veterans Hospital, in New Jersey. The World War I army veteran was buried in Lutheran Cemetary, New York.
