Frankie Kovacs started boxing in the amateurs sponsored by the Perth Amboy, New Jersey Knights of Columbus.
Later he was sponsored by the Perth Amboy Y.M.C.A. He won the New Jersey Welterweight Golden Gloves Championship and then he entered the United States Navy.
While in the Navy he fought under Tony Zale. After serving overseas, Frankie assisted Zale as a boxing instructor.
After being discharged, Frankie turned professional under the management of Gummy Sneider. He went on to have 61 bouts.
